Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) was an Indian lawyer, political leader, and advocate of non-violent resistance. His documented visit to Aden on 3 September 1931 remains one of the city's notable encounters with a major twentieth-century world figure.
Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948), the leader of India's non-violent independence movement, made a brief but historically significant visit to Aden on the 3rd September 1931 while travelling aboard the S.S. Rajputana from Bombay to London to attend the Second Round Table Conference.
At the time, Aden was one of the British Empire's most important ports and a vital gateway connecting India, East Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Nearly every major passenger liner travelling between India and Britain called at Aden, making the port an important meeting place for travellers, officials, merchants, and local communities.
The S.S. Rajputana reached Aden on 3 September 1931. During the ship's stop, Gandhi met members of Aden's Indian community, who organized a public reception in his honour. He was presented with an official Address of Welcome and a ceremonial purse, a traditional expression of respect and support.
Gandhi also granted an interview to the Reuters news agency before responding to the public reception.
The first person to go onboard to greet khadi-clad Mahatma Gandhi was Mohammed Ali Luqman, a renowned Arab journalist and editor of the Aden Chronicle newspaper. Mr. Luqman recollects, “I stood silent in front of a man who has been sent by god to change the face of Asia.” He introduced himself to Gandhiji as the President of the ‘Arab Reform Club’, whose branches existed in the Al-Tawahi and Sheikh Othman areas of Aden, and later accompanied him in the city.
On his way back from London, Gandhiji once again passed by Aden but was not allowed to disembark. The first question he asked upon reaching Aden was “Where is my friend Luqman?
In his reply to the welcoming ceremony, Gandhi spoke not only about India's struggle for independence but also about the wider role that a free nation could play in promoting peace and cooperation among peoples.
One of the best-known statements from his Aden visit was:
"A free India could be a great force of service to the whole of mankind."
This message reflected Gandhi's belief that India's freedom was closely connected with the principles of peace, justice, and international goodwill.
Historical Importance
Although Gandhi's stay in Aden lasted only a short time, it remains an important chapter in the city's history.
During the early twentieth century, Aden was home to a large and active Indian community, including merchants, professionals, government employees, and dock workers. Gandhi's visit highlighted the close historical links between Aden and the Indian subcontinent during the British colonial period.
His stop in Aden also illustrates the city's international importance as one of the world's busiest ports on the sea route between Asia and Europe.

Today, Mahatma Gandhi's brief visit to Aden is remembered as one of the notable visits by an international historical figure during the British colonial era. His appearance in the city connected Aden with one of the twentieth century's greatest advocates of non-violence, civil rights, and peaceful political change.
Although his visit lasted only a few hours before the S.S. Rajputana continued its voyage toward the Suez Canal and London, it remains a documented event in the chronology of Gandhi's journey to the Second Round Table Conference.
