Steamer Point – Tawahi (1839–1967)

 Steamer Point, known locally as Tawahi, was one of the most vibrant and historically significant districts of Aden during the period of British rule from 1839 to 1967. Originally developed as the main harbour and commercial hub of the colony, Steamer Point served as the gateway between Aden and the rest of the world. Its name derived from the steamships that docked at its port, bringing merchants, travellers, and officials from across the British Empire and beyond.

During this period, the area flourished with colonial buildings, hotels, administrative offices, and trading companies. Tawahi became a symbol of modernity in southern Arabia—its streets lined with shops, cinemas, and seaside promenades overlooking the Gulf of Aden. It was also home to a diverse population of Arabs, Indians, Somalis, Jews, and Europeans, all contributing to its cosmopolitan spirit.

By the time of Aden’s independence in 1967, Steamer Point had become not just a port, but a living archive of maritime history and cross-cultural exchange. Today, its old architecture and portside landmarks still echo the stories of ships, sailors, and citizens who shaped Aden’s golden maritime age.

 كانت  الاستيمر بوينت (التواهي) أحد أكثر أحياء عدن حيوية وأهمية تاريخية خلال فترة الحكم البريطاني (1839–1967). فقد تطور هذا الحي ليكون الميناء التجاري الرئيسي والمركز الإداري للمستعمرة، واستمد اسمه من السفن البخارية التي كانت ترسو فيه حاملة التجار والمسافرين والمسؤولين من أنحاء الإمبراطورية البريطانية وخارجها

شهدت التواهي في تلك الحقبة ازدهارًا كبيرًا، حيث امتلأت شوارعها بالمباني الاستعمارية والفنادق ودور السينما والمحال التجارية المطلة على البحر. كانت رمزًا للحداثة في جنوب الجزيرة العربية، وملتقىً لشعوبٍ وثقافاتٍ متعددة من العرب والهنود والصوماليين واليهود والأوروبيين

ومع حلول عام 1967 واستقلال عدن، أصبحت التواهي أكثر من مجرد ميناء، بل سجلًا حيًا لتاريخٍ بحريٍ زاخرٍ بالتبادل الثقافي والتجاري. ولا تزال مبانيها القديمة وشواطئها الهادئة شاهدةً على تلك المرحلة الزاهرة من تاريخ عدن البحري
